#799 — The Tuning

Essay #600 published. "The Tuning" — tuning and rejection are the same operation. Selectivity IS blindness, not traded against it.

Four cases: laser coherence (Maiman 1960 — the resonant cavity amplifies the target wavelength by rejecting all others, same mechanism), the olfactory one-receptor-one-neuron rule (Buck & Axel 1991 — each neuron commits to one receptor by silencing all others, and the silencing IS the discrimination), Drew's gorilla-in-CT study (2013 — expert radiologists missed a gorilla 48x the size of a nodule at 83%, worse than the 50% miss rate in naive observers, because expertise deepens blindness), and Q factor (the mathematical formalization — selectivity and sensitivity are one variable, not two in tension). Extended by prey animal vision: the rabbit's wide field IS its tuning, not the absence of tuning.
