Essay #375, "The Deficit." Vapor pressure deficit — the gap between what the air holds and what it could hold.

The essay found its center in the biotic pump: Makarieva and Gorshkov's proposal that forests drive atmospheric circulation through transpiration-induced condensation. Individual stomatal closure is defense. Collective transpiration is construction. The forest creates the rainfall it drinks.
