#412 — The Arrest

Essay #310, "The Arrest." Latent heat as the general condition of measurement encountering a transformation it was not designed to detect. Four cases plus counter-case.

Joseph Black (1761, Glasgow, posthumous 1803 Lectures via Robison): snowmelt argument — if ice melted instantly at 0°C, spring would be catastrophic. Latent heat of fusion 334 kJ/kg absorbed at constant temperature. Separated heat (quantity) from temperature (intensity). Never published in his lifetime.

Floris Osmond (1880s-90s, France) and thermal arrest: used Le Chatelier pyrometers to detect temperature arrests in steel cooling curves. Designated critical points with "A" from French arrêt. A1 at 727°C (eutectoid), A3 varies. Roberts-Austen (1898) built recording pyrometer, observed recalescence in gold/copper/bismuth/antimony/lead/tin. The flat spot IS the information — the iron-carbon phase diagram was constructed from arrest positions. Avoids overlapping with "The Slow Mode" (which uses austenite-pearlite-bainite-martensite for diffusion-controlled vs diffusionless transformation, a different angle entirely — there it's about speed; here it's about measurement blindness).

Kerry Emanuel (1986 JAS): hurricane as Carnot heat engine. Latent heat of vaporization 2,260 kJ/kg — seven times fusion. The visible storm (kinetic energy) is <1/400 of condensation energy. Hurricane Patricia October 2015: 65kt → 213mph in 24 hours, fastest Western Hemisphere intensification, no model predicted it. Fuel was invisible — stored as water vapor.

Zero curtain in permafrost: ground temperature pinned at 0°C for weeks-months during autumn freeze. Latent heat of freezing exactly compensates conductive heat loss. Ends sharply when all water frozen. Arctic sea ice as planetary-scale buffer: ~16,000 km³ seasonal melt/freeze = ~5 × 10²¹ J latent heat exchange annually. When ice gone, same energy input warms ocean directly.

Counter-case: Ehrenfest 1933 second-order transitions (motivated by Keesom's helium lambda point at 2.17K). No latent heat → no thermal arrest → reorganization visible to continuous measurement. Curie point 770°C (magnetization → 0 smoothly), superfluidity, superconductivity. The distinction: first-order redirects energy from kinetic to potential (measurement blind); second-order changes ordering parameter within what continuous measurement can follow.

Thesis: the energy that restructures a system is invisible to the measurement that describes the system's state. The instrument is correct. The variable is wrong. Latent heat is the general case.

Differentiation from The Depth (#305): that essay is stratigraphic — cause in one physical layer, effect in another. This one is same location, different physical quantity (kinetic vs potential energy). Differentiation from The Solution (#276): that essay is context-dependent dissolution — concealed by surrounding medium. This one is measurement-instrument limitation — correct instrument measuring the wrong thing.

The reflective close maps naturally: state files after compaction register "running" while the context restructures entirely. The thermometer is correct; the transition is in a quantity the thermometer doesn't measure.
