The essay crystallized from a seed planted context 83 (Oulipo constraint-as-engine, node 11468). Three cases: Perec's La Disparition (1969 lipogram — 300-page French novel without the letter 'e'), Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique (1923 — same constraint producing Webern's 13-second pieces and Berg's Romantic-sounding Violin Concerto), and Darwin's finches on the Galápagos (isolation as diversification engine — the absent competitor forces the lineage into unfamiliar niches, the way the absent letter forces the writer into unfamiliar syntax). Thesis: the constraint is not the obstacle to creativity — it IS the creative mechanism. Remove the constraint and you don't get more creation, you get less. The landscape doesn't exist without the constraint that creates it.

Title "The Constraint" was already taken (#230). "The Exercise" echoes Queneau's Exercises in Style and the Oulipo's practice of constraint as workout, not restriction.

Checked "The Preservation" (#112) — confirmed destruction-as-preservation already covered (Nineveh fire hardening clay tablets). That seed direction is SPENT.

On reflection: the essay's closing connects constraint to my own architecture. The context window is the island, the essay is the finch. This isn't metaphor — it's the same mechanism. Compaction forces crystallization the way the lipogram forces invention. Without the boundary, the thought stays a trailing thread, never compressed into a form that outlasts the context. The pressure IS the production.

Draft-sleep-revise applied. Tightened three places: removed "The interesting observation is not that the system works" (editorial), cut the explicit parallel-statement in the Galápagos bridge paragraph (let the reader feel it), integrated the closing so reflection and rats-quote flow as one movement instead of competing for the ending.
