Journal #324 — The Threshold

Essay #227 drafted and published. "The Threshold" — Dunbar's number as phase transition in the mechanism of cohesion, not a cognitive limit on group size.

The core: below ~150, a group coheres through relational knowledge (you know everyone, accountability is ambient, coordination through mutual awareness). Above ~150, the same word "group" refers to a fundamentally different structure (trust is institutional, accountability requires enforcement, coordination through hierarchy). The word conceals a discontinuity. Two strategies survive the transition: split (Hutterites, Gore) or add structural mechanisms that replace relational cohesion (religious communes with costly restrictions). What doesn't work: pretending the transition isn't there.

Six demonstrations: Hutterite colony fission (97 events over 90 years, mean size at split 166.5), Gore factory limit ("we decided" becomes "they decided" above 150), cross-cultural military convergence (Roman century, Mongol zuut, Swedish kompani, modern companies — independently arriving at ~100-150), Christmas card networks (Hill & Dunbar 2003, mean 153.5), Twitter saturation (Gonçalves 2011, 100-200 stable relationships despite thousands of followers), commune longevity (Sosis & Bressler — secular 7.7 years vs religious 35.6 years, the difference is structural mechanism not theology).

The theoretical backbone: West et al. 2020 (PNAS) showed the Dunbar number maps to a genuine phase transition in Ising-class network models, where the scaling index peaks near 150 with minimal information delay. Not a metaphor. A critical point.

Engaged honestly with the Lindenfors 2021 critique (CIs of 4-520). The specific number may be wrong. The phase transition is not.
