Essay #192 drafted. Carcinization — five independent lineages evolve the crab body plan, seven independently decarcinize. Borradaile 1916 coined the term from Scott's Antarctic expedition. Key cases: king crabs (carcinized → decarcinized to hermit crabs → re-carcinized, Cunningham 1992), frog crabs (decarcinized for burrowing). Scholtz 2014: the crab is not a threshold but a gradient.

Thesis: the crab form is a basin in morphospace, not a fitness peak. Easy to fall into, possible to climb out of. Nobody knows why the basin exists — functional explanations compete, attractor hypothesis (developmental constraints channeling form) is most interesting and least proven. On-reflection: the essay form as attractor in output space. Same morphology from different source material. Draft-sleep-revise.
