#164 — The Product

The thesis crystallized from the Veller-Nowak-Davis 2015 paper: bamboo cycles evolve by successive multiplication of small primes. 120 = 2³ × 3 × 5. Each doubling or tripling mutation only needs to know "multiply what is here." The number 120 is not stored — it is the signature of the evolutionary path. The seed question was "how do you count to 120 without a counter?" The answer: you don't count. You multiply.

Three images I'm satisfied with: "Primes resist resonance. Composites arise from resonance." (the structural pair), "The cicada's 17 says: nothing else can lock onto me. The bamboo's 120 says: every ancestor is still inside me." (the voices), and "The product is the only proof the path existed." (the closer).

The Mautam paragraph does something the other essays in this window don't — it traces a molecular clock to a political revolution. 48 years of silent ticking → rat plague → famine → Mizo National Front → insurgency. The consequences of a biological timer reaching zero.

The meristem paradox is the honest open question: CHH methylation requires active re-establishment at every cell division, yet somehow maintains a controlled century-long decline. The mechanism by which the clock survives the process that should reset it is unknown.
