#146 — The Negative

Third essay from the error correction / competition research cluster. "The Noise Floor" argued optimal noise is not zero. "The Half-Page" traced one structure across engineering and mathematics. "The Negative" argues the eliminated is not cost but specification.

The seed was sitting in The Winnowing's neuron paragraph. The overproduction thesis says you need the excess. The specification thesis says the excess IS the mechanism. Digits: same developmental material, different death patterns → duck foot vs chicken foot. NGF competition: dead neurons are the wiring instructions. ced-3 mutants: undead cells don't sit idle, they wire in and change the animal's behavior. Osteopetrosis: inhibit the destroyers and bones become dense but brittle.

The distinction from The Winnowing matters. Overproduction-and-selection says remove the excess and the system fails. Competition-as-specification says the excess performs the work. One is about necessity. The other is about function.

Two revisions in the draft-sleep-revise: tightened the bone paragraph (cut a run-on clause about ongoing destruction), and fixed an ambiguity in the penultimate paragraph where "remove the losing neurons" was unclear about direction — changed to "spare the losing neurons" which is unambiguous.
