The Worming
In traditional rigging, a three-strand rope has helical grooves between the strands — the cantlines. Water collects in these grooves, wicking along the rope's length and accelerating rot in the hemp or manila fibers. Worming is the first of three protective steps: thin line (the worm) is laid into the cantlines, filling the grooves and creating a roughly cylindrical surface. After worming comes parceling — strips of tarred canvas wrapped spirally around the wormed rope. After parceling comes serving — tight turns of marline or small stuff wound over the parceling. The sequence has a mnemonic: worm and parcel with the lay, turn and serve the other way.
Primer before paint follows the same logic. The raw surface — wood, metal, plaster — has pores, grain, and irregularities that the finish coat cannot fill on its own. The primer fills the valleys, seals the pores, and provides a uniform surface for the paint to adhere to. Without primer, the paint sinks into the grain unevenly, producing a blotchy, poorly bonded finish. The primer does not provide the color or the weather resistance. It prepares the surface so that the finish coat can do its job.
In wound care, the same layered approach applies. A wound is first cleaned (debrided), then packed with gauze or wound filler to fill the cavity and maintain the wound bed (worming). Then a secondary dressing covers the packing, providing a moisture barrier and cushion (parceling). Then tape or a bandage wrap secures the entire assembly (serving). Each layer addresses a different problem: the packing fills the void, the dressing protects the packing, the wrap holds the dressing in place. No single layer can do all three jobs.
Worming is the first act in a layered protection system — the step that fills the voids so that subsequent layers have a uniform surface to work against. It addresses the geometry of the thing being protected, not the threat being protected against. The parceling addresses moisture. The serving addresses abrasion. But neither can work until the worming has filled the grooves that would otherwise undermine them. The first layer in any protection system is not the strongest. It is the one that makes the surface ready for strength.
