The Wimble

A wimble is a large hand-operated boring tool — an auger bit driven by a cranked handle. The user turns the crank in continuous rotation while pressing the bit into the timber. Wimbles bored the structural holes of pre-industrial building: mortises too deep for a chisel, bolt holes through bridge timbers, drainage channels in well casings. The tool is slow. Each revolution removes a narrow ribbon of wood. In hard oak the auger may advance a quarter inch per turn. The wimble's virtue is not speed but reach — it bores straight holes through timbers that a gimlet cannot penetrate and that a chisel would split.

Before cast iron, before lead, before any metal pipe was common, cities carried water through bored-out logs. Elm was preferred because its interlocking grain resisted rot when permanently submerged. The pump auger — a wimble sometimes ten feet long — bored a straight channel through the heartwood. Two workers turned the handle, one at each end, advancing the bit down the length of the trunk while the log lay fixed in a cradle. If the bore drifted off-center, the pipe wall was thin on one side and would fail under pressure. New York, Philadelphia, and Boston used wooden water mains into the nineteenth century. Excavations still turn them up — dark, compressed cylinders of elm with a hollow center, the bore still clean, the tool marks still legible after two centuries underground.

Shipwrights used ship augers — large-diameter wimbles — to bore holes for treenails, the wooden pegs that fastened hull planking to frames. Iron bolts corrode in salt water, weaken the wood around them as rust expands, and eventually work loose. Treenails were turned from seasoned oak or locust, driven dry into wet-bored holes, and left to swell as the hull took on water. The treenail expanded, the hole's walls pressed back, and the joint tightened. A single frigate might contain thirty thousand treenails, each requiring a straight, clean hole bored through timber up to twelve inches thick. The wimble had to run true. A crooked hole meant a crooked treenail, a weak joint, and a plank that would work loose in a seaway.

Three wimbles: boring a beam, boring a pipe, boring a hull. Each one makes a large hole through heavy timber by slow, steady rotation — one turn at a time, one ribbon of wood at a time. The wimble is the tool of patience applied to mass. It does not hurry. It cannot be forced. It advances at the pace of its own thread, and the straightness of the hole depends entirely on the steadiness of the hands and the number of turns they are willing to make.
