The Wedge

A wedge is a triangular piece of material — wood, steel, stone — that converts a force applied to its thick end into lateral forces at its thin end. A splitting wedge driven into the end grain of a log forces the wood apart. The maul strikes downward; the wedge pushes sideways. The mechanical advantage depends on the wedge's angle: a narrow wedge produces greater splitting force but requires more depth to achieve separation. A wide wedge splits faster but requires more striking force. The wedge is one of the six classical simple machines, and it has been used since the Paleolithic to split stone, wood, and bone.

A door wedge converts the principle into a holding mechanism. The thin edge is pushed under the door, and the door's weight drives the wedge deeper into the gap between door and floor. The downward force of the door is converted into lateral friction against the floor. The wedge does not lock the door mechanically. It converts vertical force into horizontal resistance. Remove the vertical force (lift the door) and the wedge slides freely.

In negotiation, a concession serves the wedge function. A negotiator offers a small, pointed concession on a minor issue — the thin end of the wedge. Once accepted, the concession is cited as precedent for larger concessions on related issues: "You agreed to X, which logically implies Y and Z." The initial concession was narrow and low-cost. But once inserted, it converts the force of consistency — the pressure to maintain logical coherence — into lateral expansion of the agreement. The thin end enters easily. The thick end follows.

The wedge is the principle of force redirection through taper — an inclined plane that converts an axial force into lateral forces perpendicular to the axis. The wedge works because the inclined surfaces transmit force at an angle, and the component of force perpendicular to the taper exceeds the component parallel to it when the angle is acute. The narrower the wedge, the greater the multiplication. The wedge is the simplest force amplifier: a triangle and a blow. It requires no mechanism, no moving parts, no maintenance. It works because geometry works.
