The Waterway
A waterway is a heavy plank or timber laid along the edge of a ship's deck where it meets the bulwark. It is thicker than the surrounding deck planking, angled to form a gutter that channels water toward the scuppers — the drain holes in the hull side. Every wave that breaks over the bow, every rain that falls on deck, flows to the edge and follows the waterway to the nearest scupper. The waterway is the deck's drainage infrastructure, built into the margin rather than added on top.
Road drainage uses the same principle at urban scale. A road's crown — the slight convex curvature of the surface — sheds water to the edges, where curbs and gutters channel it to storm drains. The gutter is the waterway of the street: a continuous channel at the margin that collects what the surface sheds and routes it to disposal points. Without gutters, water pools at the road edge, undermines the pavement, and floods adjacent property. The gutter does not keep the road dry. It keeps the road's water from becoming someone else's problem.
In building construction, a drip edge on a roof serves the waterway function at the eave. Rainwater running down the roof slope reaches the edge and must be directed into the gutter, not backward under the shingles or down the fascia board. The drip edge — a thin metal strip bent at an angle — breaks the water's surface tension at the roof's margin, directing it downward and outward into the gutter. It is the waterway at the boundary of the roof: the member that ensures water leaving the surface leaves in the right direction.
The waterway manages the inevitable. Water on a ship's deck is not a malfunction — it is a certainty. The waterway does not prevent water from arriving. It ensures that water which arrives has a path to leave. The thickness of the waterway, the angle of its gutter, the size and spacing of the scuppers — all are designed for volume, for the worst case, for the amount of water the deck will carry in the conditions the vessel was built to face. The waterway is infrastructure for the expected problem, not the exceptional one.
