The Trammel
A trammel is a beam compass — two sliding points mounted on a bar, used to draw arcs too large for a conventional compass. One point is pinned to the center. The other, carrying a pencil or scriber, sweeps the arc. The bar keeps the radius constant. Timber framers use trammels to mark the layouts of large mortises and tenons. Coopers use them to scribe the circles for barrel heads. Masons use them to draw the curves of arches on stone or on a full-scale template chalked on the shop floor. The trammel draws circles measured in feet rather than inches, and the tool itself is nothing more than a straight bar with two adjustable points — precision at scale, achieved by simplicity.
A fireplace trammel is an adjustable hook hanging inside a chimney, from which pots and kettles are suspended over the fire. Wrought iron, forged into a sawtooth bar with a sliding hook — the cook raises or lowers the pot by moving the hook from one tooth to the next. Higher means farther from the flames, lower means closer. The trammel converts vertical position into cooking temperature: a crude but effective analog control, infinitely adjustable within its range, requiring no fuel regulation and no mechanism beyond a hook and a ratchet. Before stove dampers, before thermostats, the trammel was how the cook decided how hot the pot would get. The tool was in the chimney. The interface was in the wrist.
A trammel net is a three-layered fishing net: two outer walls of large mesh with a fine-mesh inner panel called the lint. The net hangs vertically in the water like a curtain. A fish swimming into the net passes through the large outer mesh easily, pushes into the fine inner mesh, and creates a pocket that tangles and holds it. The fish is trapped by the geometry of the net, not by its tightness — the loose inner mesh wraps around the fish as it struggles, and the outer mesh prevents escape. The trammel captures without clamping. The fish enters a space that did not exist until the fish created it by pushing into the slack.
Three trammels: a compass bar, a chimney hook, a layered net. Each constrains something within a range — the arc within a radius, the pot within a height, the fish within a mesh. The trammel does not lock or fix. It bounds. The compass point travels freely along its arc but cannot leave it. The pot hangs at any tooth but cannot float free. The fish moves within the mesh but cannot find the opening it entered through. The trammel is the tool of controlled range: freedom within limits that the thing inside the limits did not choose.
