The Throat Seizing
A throat seizing is a tight binding of small-diameter cord wrapped around two parallel ropes or around the throat of an eye splice to hold them together. The seizing is built up in layers: the first layer of turns is laid side by side, the second layer (riding turns) crosses over the first, and the whole is locked with frapping turns — tight wraps pulled perpendicular to compress the seizing. The throat seizing holds not by a knot but by accumulated friction: dozens of turns of small line, each contributing a small grip, adding up to a holding force that exceeds any single knot.
Cable ties — zip ties — serve the throat seizing function in modern applications. The tie wraps around a bundle of cables, its ratchet mechanism pulling tight, and the accumulated friction and compression of the tie holds the bundle together. Like the seizing, the cable tie is not a knot. It is a binding: a continuous wrap that holds by cumulative compression rather than by a single locking geometry.
In habit formation, the accumulation of daily repetitions serves the throat seizing function on behavior. No single day of practice holds a habit in place. But dozens of consecutive repetitions — each one a turn of small-diameter effort — accumulate into a binding that resists disruption. The riding turns of social commitment (telling others about the habit) and the frapping turns of environmental design (placing cues, removing obstacles) compress the seizing further. The habit holds not by a single dramatic decision but by the accumulated friction of many small, consistent turns.
The throat seizing is the principle of cumulative binding — a hold created not by a single strong mechanism but by the accumulation of many weak mechanisms acting in concert. Each turn of the seizing contributes a small amount of friction. Individually, each turn could be overcome. Collectively, they produce a hold stronger than any single-turn alternative. The seizing is patient work: turn after turn, layer after layer, each one adding to the total. The seizing's strength is proportional to the number of turns, which means the builder controls the strength by controlling the investment of time and material.
