The Tenon
A tenon is a projection shaped on the end of a piece of wood to fit into a mortise — the corresponding cavity in the receiving piece. The tenon is formed by removing wood from around it: saw cuts define the shoulders, and the waste is chiseled away, leaving a rectangular tongue that fits the mortise precisely. The tenon's width matches the mortise's width. Its thickness matches the mortise's depth. Its length determines how deep the joint seats. The tenon is not added to the piece. It is revealed by removing everything around it.
A key on a keyboard is a tenon in electronics. The key's stem — a cross-shaped or cylindrical projection — descends into the switch housing below. The stem fits the housing precisely, and the mechanical interaction between stem and housing determines the keystroke's feel: resistance, travel, click. The stem is shaped to match the cavity of the switch, and the match between them defines the keyboard's action. Like a woodworking tenon, the key stem is the part that inserts, and the quality of the instrument depends on the precision of the fit.
In academic writing, a thesis statement serves the tenon function. The thesis is shaped by removing surrounding material — qualifications are pared away, scope is narrowed, the argument is reduced to its essential projection. The thesis inserts into the mortise of the discipline's existing discourse — the gap in knowledge, the unanswered question, the ongoing debate that receives the contribution. The thesis must match the gap precisely: too broad and it does not seat; too narrow and it rattles in the cavity. The thesis is revealed by removing everything around it, the same way the tenon is revealed by removing the waste wood.
The tenon is the principle of the shaped projection — an element formed by subtraction, designed to fit a corresponding void. The tenon is always smaller than the piece it comes from, because forming it requires removing material. This means the tenon's strength is always less than the full piece's strength — the joint is necessarily weaker than the members it joins. The tenon accepts this compromise because the alternative — no joint at all — is worse. The tenon is the recognition that connection requires reduction: to fit into something else, you must become smaller than yourself.
