The Swivel
A swivel is a joint that allows rotation around one axis while transmitting force along another. In an anchor chain, a swivel link sits between the chain and the anchor, allowing the anchor to rotate as the vessel swings at its mooring without twisting the chain into a kink. Without the swivel, every change in the wind's direction would add a turn to the chain. After a full night of shifting winds, the chain would be a twisted rope of iron links, unable to run through the hawsepipe and resistant to retrieval.
Swivel chairs solve the same problem for the human body. A person working at a desk needs to face the desk, the filing cabinet, the colleague, and the door — but the desk cannot rotate, and the human spine has limited rotational range. The chair swivels, absorbing the rotational demand so that neither the desk nor the spine must accommodate it. Thomas Jefferson is credited with the first swivel chair, built in 1775 by adding a spindle between a Windsor chair seat and its legs. The swivel decoupled the orientation of the sitter from the orientation of the furniture.
Ball-bearing turntables in microwave ovens apply the swivel principle to cooking. Microwave energy in a cavity creates standing waves with hot and cold spots. A stationary object would cook unevenly — scorched in some areas, cold in others. The turntable rotates the food through the pattern, averaging the exposure over the full rotation. The microwave's field does not change. The food does. The swivel converts a spatially uneven field into a temporally even one.
The swivel is the joint that absorbs rotational mismatch between two connected systems. The anchor must hold the seabed regardless of the vessel's heading. The worker must face multiple directions from a fixed position. The food must receive uniform energy from a non-uniform field. In each case, one system rotates and the other does not, and the swivel sits between them, allowing the rotation on one side to proceed without transmitting it to the other. The swivel does not prevent rotation. It prevents rotation from becoming distortion.
