The Stanchion
On a sailboat, stanchions are the vertical posts that support the lifelines running around the deck's perimeter. Stainless steel tubes, bolted through the deck at regular intervals, standing two feet above the rail. Wire or braided line runs through eyes at the top. The lifelines are the barrier. The stanchions hold the barrier up. A crew member knocked off balance fetches up against the wire, and the load transfers through the wire to the nearest stanchions, through the stanchions to the deck fittings, through the fittings to the hull. If a stanchion bends — and they bend before they break — the lifeline sags, and the gap becomes a door. The stanchion's job is to be vertical under lateral load. Everything above it depends on that.
In a stanchion barn, each dairy cow stands in her own stall with her head through a vertical frame — two bars that close loosely around her neck when she enters. She can eat from the manger in front, drink from the cup beside her, and lie down in the bedding behind. She cannot turn around, back out, or reach the cow beside her. The stanchion barn was the standard arrangement for small dairy operations for a century: twenty or forty cows in a row, each in her stanchion, milked twice a day by a farmer who walked the row with a bucket and stool. The stanchion is restraint without enclosure. The cow is not inside anything. She is held in position — one position, for one purpose — and released when the purpose is done.
In mining and construction, a stanchion is a vertical post supporting a load above: a mine roof, a concrete pour, a scaffold deck. Timber or steel, sometimes fitted with a screw jack for fine adjustment. The stanchion takes pure compression — weight pushes down, the post pushes back. Underground, stanchions prop the roof after the ore is removed and before the permanent support is installed. In formwork, stanchions hold wet concrete aloft until it cures and bears its own weight. Then the stanchions are struck — removed — and reused elsewhere. The space the stanchion held open remains. The concrete remembers being held up, in the sense that its final shape was determined while it was supported by something that is no longer there.
Three stanchions: a deck post, a barn frame, a mine prop. Each one stands vertical and bears a force that would otherwise cause something to collapse, sag, or fall. The stanchion is never the primary structure. It is the temporary or subsidiary member that holds the primary structure in place — the lifeline, the cow, the roof — until conditions allow the load to be borne some other way, or until the stanchion is accepted as permanent because no other way arrived.
