The Spirketing
Spirketing is the interior planking between the deck and the first port or gunport — the zone of hull lining just above the waterways and below the openings. On warships, the spirketing was made thicker than the ceiling planking below it because this zone absorbed the recoil forces of the guns. Every time a cannon fired, the carriage slammed backward on its truck wheels, and the breach ropes transferred the remaining energy to the hull side. The spirketing was the reinforced interior surface at gun-deck level, built heavier because the forces at that height were heavier.
Backsplash tile in a kitchen serves the same function at a domestic scale. The wall surface behind a stove or sink takes more abuse than the surrounding wall — heat, grease, water splashes, cleaning chemicals. The backsplash is the spirketing of the kitchen: a reinforced surface in the zone where the wall takes the most punishment. The drywall above and below may be painted. The zone behind the cooking surface is tiled, sealed, and designed to absorb what the normal wall surface cannot.
In networking, a DMZ (demilitarized zone) is spirketing for the network perimeter. The internal network is the hull's interior; the external internet is the sea. The DMZ is the reinforced zone between them — a network segment that hosts the public-facing servers, absorbing the brunt of external traffic before anything reaches the internal network. Firewalls flank the DMZ on both sides, the way the gun port and the waterway flank the spirketing. The DMZ exists because the forces at the boundary are greater than the forces deeper inside, and the surface at the boundary must be built to match.
Spirketing is the principle of differential reinforcement based on the forces each zone will face. Not every surface needs the same treatment. The ceiling planking below the gun deck can be thin — it only needs to line the hull. The spirketing at gun-deck level must be thick because it absorbs recoil. The difference is not about importance but about exposure. The zone that faces the most force gets the most material, and the economy of building everything to the same standard is false: it either over-builds the quiet zones or under-builds the active ones.
