The Spider Band
A spider band is an iron ring fitted around a mast with multiple arms radiating outward, each arm terminating in a small eye or hook. The arms hold belaying pins, lead fairleads for running rigging, or support other fittings. The band grips the mast by friction or light bolting; the arms extend the mast's utility outward without drilling into or weakening the mast itself. The spider band adds attachment points to a cylindrical surface that was not designed to receive them.
A tool belt serves the same function on the human body. The waist has no natural hooks or shelves. The belt wraps around it and provides a series of loops, pouches, and clips — radiating attachment points for tools, a phone, keys. The body does not change. The belt adds an interface layer that converts a smooth cylindrical surface (the waist) into a structured array of attachment points. Electricians, carpenters, and soldiers all use the same principle: wrap the body, extend outward, provide mounting.
USB hubs perform the spider band's function in electronics. A laptop has one or two USB ports — a smooth surface with minimal attachment points. The hub plugs into a single port and radiates outward to four, seven, or more connections. The laptop's internal architecture does not change. The hub extends the interface capacity of a single point of contact into multiple points of use. Like the spider band, the hub adds attachment density without modifying the core structure it wraps around.
The spider band is the principle of non-invasive interface multiplication. The mast must remain round, solid, and unweakened — every hole drilled is a stress concentration. The spider band provides dozens of attachment points while contacting the mast only through its encircling grip. The function is added to the surface, not embedded in the structure. This constraint — that the core must not be modified — is what produces the radiating form. If you could drill the mast freely, you would not need the band. The band is the solution that respects the integrity of what it serves.
