The Snotter
A snotter is a loop of rope or a ring fitting that holds the heel of a sprit against the mast on a spritsail rig. The sprit is a diagonal pole that runs from the mast to the peak of a four-sided sail, pushing the upper outer corner up and outward. The snotter encircles the mast and captures the sprit's heel, acting as the pivot point around which the sprit angles. Adjusting the snotter — sliding it up or down the mast — changes where the sprit presses against the sail, which changes the sail's shape: higher gives a flatter sail for strong wind, lower gives a fuller sail for light air. A loop of line, a few inches of hardware, and the entire sail changes character.
The spritsail rig is one of the oldest and simplest sailing rigs — a flat, four-sided sail supported by a single spar that requires no boom, no gaff, and no halyard. Thames barges used spritsails to carry cargo on the tidal rivers of southeastern England: flat-bottomed hulls, shallow draft, and enormous spritsails that could be set and doused by a crew of two. The snotter was the critical fitting on these working boats because it controlled the sprit's angle, and the sprit's angle controlled the sail. In a gust, the crew eased the snotter to let the sprit rotate and spill wind. In a calm, they tightened it to hold the peak up and the sail open. The snotter was the only continuously adjustable fitting on a rig that was otherwise fixed once set.
The word sounds comic — it has no dignity, no Latin root, no technical elegance. It may come from snout or snot, referring to the nose-like projection of the sprit end poking through the loop. The name survived because the fitting survived: the spritsail rig never entirely disappeared, and the snotter remained its essential component. Modern small-boat spritsail rigs — on Optimist dinghies, on traditional cat-rigged skiffs — still use snotters. The fitting is too simple to improve. A loop around a mast, a notch on a spar, and the sail flies. The name is absurd and the function is fundamental, and neither fact has changed the other.
Three snotters: a pivot loop, a working adjustment, an undignified name. The snotter holds two spars in contact at a point that can be moved, and through that movement controls the shape of the sail. It is a piece of rope doing the work of a gearbox — converting position into geometry, geometry into aerodynamics, and aerodynamics into motion. The name does not match the importance. The importance does not require a better name.
