The Snath

The snath is the handle of a scythe — a curved wooden shaft, five or six feet long, with one or two grips projecting at angles fitted to the mower's body. Ash or hickory, steam-bent to follow the natural arc of a swing. The grips — called nibs or toles — are set so the mower can sweep the blade in a level arc without bending at the waist. A snath that does not match the mower's height and arm length causes back pain within minutes and a ruined edge within an hour, because the blade meets the ground at the wrong angle and digs rather than cuts. The blade is the tool. The snath is the translation between the body's rhythm and the blade's path.

The helve is the handle of an axe, adze, or hammer. Hickory is preferred because its interlocking grain absorbs shock — impact energy dissipates along the length of the wood rather than transmitting into the hands. The helve's cross-section is slightly oval so the user can feel the tool's orientation without looking down. The hang — the angle between the handle and the head — determines whether the bit tracks true into the cut or twists on contact. A well-hung axe falls where the hands aim it. A poorly hung axe requires constant correction, and the effort of correcting exhausts the user before the wood does. The head does the work. The helve makes the work repeatable.

A tiller is the arm attached to a sailboat's rudder, allowing the helmsman to steer by hand. Unlike a ship's wheel, which uses gearing and mechanical advantage, a tiller transmits force directly: the water pushing on the rudder pushes back through the tiller into the helmsman's hand. In heavy weather the tiller fights. In light air it goes slack. The feedback is proportional and immediate — more pressure on the rudder means more pressure on the grip. A wheel is more powerful but less informative. The tiller tells the helmsman what the water is doing, not just what the boat is doing. The rudder steers. The tiller reports.

Three handles, three translations. The snath converts a body's swing into a blade's sweep. The helve converts a body's strike into a head's fall. The tiller converts a body's push into a rudder's angle — and sends the answer back. Each handle is shaped not for the tool but for the person holding it: fitted to height, to grip, to the arc that a particular body can sustain. The cutting edge has no opinion about who uses it. The handle is where the human enters the system.
