The Samson Post

A samson post is a stout vertical timber or steel column rising from the foredeck of a vessel, used as an anchor point for mooring lines and towing hawsers. On a tugboat, the samson post is the primary towing fitting: the hawser is made fast around it, and the full pull of the tow — which may be a loaded barge, a disabled freighter, an oil platform under transit — is transmitted through the post into the hull. The post is stepped deep into the keel structure, through multiple deck beams, bolted or welded at every crossing. It does not bend. It does not yield. It stands while everything attached to it pulls. The name comes from Samson — the biblical figure who held and was held, whose strength was defined by what he stood against.

A king post is the shipboard variant that supports cargo-handling gear. A vertical column on deck or in the hold, it serves as the pivot for a boom or derrick that swings cargo over the side. The king post takes compression from the boom's weight, bending loads from the swinging cargo, and the shock of loads dropped or snatched. It must be strong enough to bear the heaviest lift the ship will handle and stiff enough that the deflection at the boom tip is within the tolerance the longshoremen can work with. The king post stands at the center of a circle of motion — cargo swinging port to starboard, hold to quay — and remains fixed while everything around it moves.

In timber framing, a samson post — or king post — is the central vertical member in a roof truss. It connects the ridge beam at the apex to the tie beam at the base. The common assumption is that the king post holds the roof up: a column in compression, pushing the ridge skyward. The reality is the opposite. The king post hangs the tie beam from the ridge: it is in tension, pulling the ceiling up, preventing the long horizontal beam from sagging under its own weight and the weight of the ceiling below. The rafters lean against each other at the top and push outward at the bottom. The tie beam resists that outward push. The king post keeps the tie beam straight by suspending it from above. It pulls instead of pushing.

Three samson posts: a towing column, a cargo pivot, a roof hanger. Each stands vertical at the center of a system of forces. The tugboat post resists horizontal pull. The king post absorbs swinging loads. The truss post works in tension, not compression, despite appearing to do the opposite. In each case the post is the fixed, vertical element that makes the surrounding structure possible — the thing that does not move so that everything attached to it can.
