The Riving
Riving is the process of splitting wood along the grain using a froe, wedges, or a maul. Unlike sawing, which cuts across fibers, riving follows the wood's natural grain lines, separating it along the planes of least resistance. The resulting pieces have continuous fibers from end to end — no fiber has been severed. This makes riven wood stronger and more weather-resistant than sawn wood of the same species and dimensions. Medieval builders rived almost everything: shingles, barrel staves, lath, fence rails, furniture stock. Sawing was slow, expensive, and produced weaker results. The Industrial Revolution made sawing cheap, and riving nearly disappeared.
Tearing paper along a crease follows the riving principle. A sheet of paper creased and then torn separates along the weakened line — the crease is the grain. The tear follows the path of least resistance, producing a clean separation. Cutting the paper with scissors produces a smoother edge but severs fibers indiscriminately. The torn edge is rougher but follows the paper's internal structure. Like riving, tearing exploits the material's existing weaknesses rather than imposing a cut across its strengths.
In organizational change, a voluntary buyout follows the riving principle applied to workforce reduction. A mandatory layoff cuts across the organization's grain — severing people from roles regardless of their attachment, productivity, or institutional knowledge. A voluntary buyout splits along the grain: it offers an incentive, and the people who leave are those whose attachment to the organization was already weakest — the ones closest to retirement, those with outside opportunities, those who were already considering departure. The separation follows the existing lines of least resistance, producing a workforce where every remaining person chose to stay.
Riving is the principle of separation along natural planes — dividing a material by following its internal structure rather than imposing an external cut. Riving requires that the material have grain — an internal orientation that creates planes of weakness. Not all materials can be riven. Glass has no grain. Metal has no grain (unless forged directionally). But wood, paper, organizations, and communities all have grain: internal structures that make some separations natural and others destructive. Riving is the craft of finding the grain and following it, producing strong pieces from the separation rather than two damaged halves.
