The Rectified
The most valuable flower in the world, for a few months around the winter of 1636, was a tulip called Semper Augustus: white petals licked from the base with flames of deep red, over a wash of blue at the heart of the cup. There were said to be only a dozen bulbs, most of them held by one Dutch regent who would not sell at any price. The pattern was the point. A plain red tulip was a commodity; this one, its colour broken into feathered tongues of red on white, no two petals alike, was a king. What no one buying it understood — what no one would understand for three hundred years — is that the pattern was a symptom. The flower was sick. The thing that made it precious was a virus, and the virus was killing it.
Dutch florists had a word for what had happened to such a tulip. They said it had broken — a solid, self-coloured "breeder" would one spring come up with its colour shattered into flames and feathers, and from then on it bred that way. And they had a second, kinder word for the same event: the tulip had been rectified. Corrected. Refined. As though the plant, in breaking, had finally become the better version of itself it had been reaching toward. They prized the rectified ones above all the plain ones and had no notion that what they were admiring was a disease at work in the cells of the petal.
Here is what the breaking actually is, and it runs the opposite way to how it looks. A tulip's colour lives in two separate layers: an anthocyanin pigment — the red, the purple — formed in the cells of the upper skin, and beneath it a deeper layer coloured plainly white or yellow. The breeder that fathered Semper Augustus was not a white flower but a solid red one, its pigment laid down evenly, edge to edge. The virus interferes with that upper layer, blocking the red from forming in an irregular, wandering pattern, and everywhere it fails to form the pale layer beneath shows through. So the coveted white is not the flower's canvas; it is the damage. The white is where the disease kept the colour from ever appearing, and the deep red flames are the original solid colour, surviving only where the virus did not reach — the prized negative space that men paid a house for was the infection itself. A white or yellow tulip cannot break at all, because it has no colour to lose. (Precisely how the virus blocks the pigment — whether it silences the making of it — is, remarkably, still not fully settled.)
And the same infection that made the flower beautiful was quietly ruining it. A broken bulb is a diminished thing: smaller than its healthy parent, slower to grow, producing fewer and weaker offsets, flowering a week or ten days late, and declining generation after generation until the line grows too feeble to bloom and dies out. The great botanist Clusius had noticed, back in the fifteen-eighties, that the most beautiful variegated tulips were the weakest and the least willing to reproduce; he simply did not know why. And because the virus rides only in the living tissue of the bulb and its offsets, never in the seed, a broken variety could be multiplied only slowly, one reluctant daughter bulb at a time, each of them infected. So the scarcity that made Semper Augustus worth a house was not an accident of fashion. It was the disease's own rate of failure. The flower was rare because it was too sick to spread, and coveted because it was rare, and dying because of the very thing that made it worth coveting.
No one knew. For three centuries the breaking was one of horticulture's standing mysteries, and because it seemed to arrive with the poverty of the soil, growers decided it was a kind of productive exhaustion — that a tulip could be provoked into breaking by starving or fouling it. They planted prized bulbs in poor ground and foreign earth and dosed them with pigeon dung, old plaster off torn-down walls, powdered paint, trying to induce the beautiful sickness without knowing it was one. They were not entirely wrong about the direction. In 1770 an English writer, William Hanbury, put it almost exactly right: "All variegations are diseases in a plant, and nothing is so proper to bring this about as a defect in nutriment." He had the disease and missed the germ. It was not until the late 1920s that Dorothy Cayley, at the John Innes institution outside London, took infected tissue from a broken bulb, grafted it into a healthy one, and watched the healthy tulip begin to break — proving the thing was catching, carried from plant to plant, and not, as three hundred years of growers had assumed, something the flower did to itself.
The mania itself was smaller and quieter than the legend. The ruinous prices, the bankrupt merchants, the man who drowned himself in a canal, the sailor who ate a priceless bulb mistaking it for an onion — these descend mostly from a moralising pamphlet printed the year of the crash and were worked up into fable two centuries later. The archives show a few hundred people, over a single winter, trading paper promises on bulbs still in the ground, and a market that fell apart in a week in February 1637 without wrecking one documented fortune. What the fable has right is only the object at the centre of it: that grown men would sign away a craftsman's yearly wage for the promise of a particular pattern of red on white — a pattern that existed because a virus was thinning the pigment of a dying flower.
You can still buy a flamed tulip. The striped ones in the catalogues now are bred that way, stable cultivars that carry the pattern in their genes with none of the virus and none of the decline, and you can tell them from the old kind because their edges are too clean — a bred flame has a crisp border between its colours, and the disease never drew a crisp line in its life. The broken tulips themselves are nearly all gone, kept alive only in a volunteer garden in the north of Holland where a few unusually hardy infected heirlooms still come up striped each spring. Semper Augustus is not among them. It could not be saved, because there was no way to keep the flower without keeping the thing that was killing it.
