The Preventer
A preventer is a line rigged from the boom to the bow or a midships point on the opposite side of the vessel. Its function is to prevent an accidental jibe — the sudden, violent swing of the boom from one side to the other when the wind crosses the stern. An uncontrolled jibe can injure crew, break rigging, and dismast the vessel. The preventer holds the boom on one side, blocking the swing. It does nothing when sailing normally. Its entire purpose is to prevent the catastrophic event that occurs when the wind shifts behind the stern.
A deadman's switch on industrial machinery serves the preventer function. The operator must maintain continuous pressure on the switch for the machine to run. If the operator releases the switch — falls, is pulled away, loses consciousness — the machine stops immediately. The switch does nothing during normal operation. Its entire purpose is to prevent the catastrophic event that occurs when the operator is no longer in control. Like the preventer, the deadman's switch is invisible when working and critical when the failure condition arrives.
In financial regulation, a circuit breaker on a stock exchange serves the preventer function. Trading proceeds normally until a price index drops by a specified percentage — typically 7%, 13%, or 20% in a single session. When the threshold is crossed, trading halts for a defined period. The circuit breaker does nothing during normal market fluctuations. It exists solely to prevent the catastrophic cascade that occurs when panic selling feeds on itself — the financial equivalent of an uncontrolled jibe. The circuit breaker holds the market on one side, blocking the violent swing until conditions stabilize.
The preventer is the principle of catastrophe-specific restraint — a mechanism that does nothing under normal conditions but blocks a specific failure mode that would produce disproportionate damage. The preventer is not a general-purpose control. It addresses one event: the jibe, the operator collapse, the panic cascade. This specificity is its design virtue. The preventer does not interfere with normal operation because it is not engaged during normal operation. It engages only when the specific conditions for the catastrophic event are met. The preventer is the safety system for the event you hope never happens but must prepare for because its consequences are irreversible.
