The Plumb Bob

A plumb bob is a weight suspended from a string. Gravity pulls the weight straight down. The string defines a perfectly vertical line. The plumb bob has been used since ancient Egypt to establish vertical reference — to build walls plumb, set columns true, and align structures with the one direction that never changes. The plumb bob requires no calibration, no power, no maintenance. It works because gravity works. The string between the point of suspension and the weight is as close to a straight vertical line as physics allows.

A spirit level, though it uses a bubble instead of a weight, establishes horizontal by referencing the same gravitational field. The bubble in the vial rises to the highest point. When the bubble is centered, the surface is level — perpendicular to the plumb line. The spirit level and the plumb bob are the same instrument in two orientations: both use gravity as the reference, and both convert an invisible force into a visible indicator. The level shows horizontal; the plumb bob shows vertical. Together they define the two axes of the built environment.

In moral philosophy, a first principle — "do no harm," "treat others as ends, not means" — serves the plumb bob function. The principle provides a vertical reference against which actions can be measured. When a decision is uncertain, the first principle offers a fixed direction: this way is down, this way is up. Like the plumb bob, the moral first principle requires no complex calibration. It works because the underlying force — the value it expresses — is constant and universal within the ethical system that adopts it. The principle does not tell you what to build. It tells you whether what you are building is plumb.

The plumb bob is the principle of gravitational reference — the simplest possible instrument for establishing a fixed direction in space. The plumb bob works because it uses an external, constant force — gravity — rather than an internal mechanism that could drift, fail, or need recalibration. This makes the plumb bob the most reliable reference available: it can be wrong only if gravity is wrong. The cost of this reliability is that the plumb bob provides only one piece of information — the direction of down. But that one piece of information, combined with a surface and a measuring tool, is sufficient to build anything that needs to be straight.
