The Peen

The peen is the end of a hammer head opposite the flat face. A ball-peen hammer has a hemispherical peen — a half-sphere of hardened steel used for shaping sheet metal, setting rivets, and closing pins. A cross-peen has a wedge running perpendicular to the handle, used to spread metal in one direction: the smith strikes with the cross-peen to draw a bar longer or move material sideways, then switches to the face to flatten what the peen displaced. A straight-peen runs parallel to the handle and moves metal along the bar's axis. The face finishes. The peen shapes. The two ends of the same head do different work, and the smith rotates between them by flipping the wrist.

Shot peening is the industrial version: bombarding a metal surface with small spheres of steel, glass, or ceramic, fired by compressed air or centrifugal wheel. Each sphere strikes the surface and bounces, leaving a tiny dimple — a microscopic impact crater. Beneath each dimple, the metal is compressed. Thousands of overlapping dimples create a continuous layer of compressive residual stress in the surface. This stress resists the formation and growth of fatigue cracks — the slow, invisible fractures that propagate through metal under cyclic loading. Aircraft landing gear, coil springs, turbine blades, and gear teeth are all shot-peened. The surface is deliberately damaged. The damage is the treatment. The part that has been beaten at small scale survives longer at large scale.

Peening a scythe blade is the oldest and most literal form: cold-hammering the cutting edge with a light peen hammer on a small anvil. Each blow draws the steel thinner and wider at the edge, extending the bevel without removing any metal. Grinding takes material away; peening moves it. The mower carries a pocket anvil into the field — a short stake driven into the ground — and peens the blade every few hours, between sessions with the whetstone. The whetstone hones the edge the peening created. The peening creates the edge the whetstone hones. Neither works alone. The hammer reshapes the steel. The stone sharpens what the hammer shaped.

Three peenings: a hammer end, an industrial bombardment, a field-sharpening technique. Each uses controlled impact to move metal rather than remove it. The dimple, the drawn edge, the compressed surface — all are created by striking, and all persist because the metal remembers being struck. The peen is the part of the hammer that does not flatten. It deforms, displaces, and reshapes, and the mark it leaves is the structure it changed.
