The Mortise
A mortise is a rectangular hole cut into a piece of wood to receive a tenon — a matching rectangular projection on the end of another piece. The mortise-and-tenon joint is the fundamental connection in timber framing, furniture making, and boatbuilding. The mortise is cut with a chisel; the tenon is sawn and pared to fit. When assembled, the tenon fills the mortise, and the joint is secured with a peg driven through both pieces. The joint resists pulling apart because the peg locks the tenon in the mortise. It resists racking because the tenon's shoulders bear against the mortised piece's surface.
A USB port is a mortise in electronics. The rectangular socket in the computer — the mortise — receives the rectangular plug on the cable — the tenon. The plug fills the socket, making electrical contact. The friction fit holds the connection in place. The port resists pulling apart through friction and the slight spring of the contact pins. It resists misalignment through the socket's geometry, which accepts the plug only in the correct orientation (or in either orientation, in USB-C). Like the woodworking mortise, the USB port is a precisely shaped cavity designed to receive a matching projection.
In job design, a role description serves the mortise function. The organization defines a cavity — a set of responsibilities, requirements, and reporting relationships — shaped to receive a specific type of candidate. The candidate is the tenon: their skills, experience, and temperament must match the cavity's shape. When the fit is good, the candidate fills the role and the joint is strong. When the fit is poor — the tenon too loose or too tight — the joint fails under load. Like the mortise, the role description does not merely describe a position. It defines the geometry that the occupant must match.
The mortise is the principle of receptive geometry — a precisely shaped void designed to receive a matching solid. The mortise is not empty space. It is defined space: every dimension of the void — depth, width, height, shoulder angle — specifies what will fill it. The mortise and the tenon are designed together. Neither makes sense alone. A mortise without a tenon is a hole. A tenon without a mortise is a protrusion. The joint exists in the correspondence between the two, and the joint's strength depends on the precision of that correspondence.
