The Limber
A limber hole is a small slot cut through the bottom of each floor timber — the transverse frames that cross the keel at regular intervals. Bilge water collects in the lowest part of the hull, between the frames. Without limber holes, each bay between frames is a separate pool: water trapped in isolated compartments, unable to reach the pump, adding weight unevenly, rotting the timbers it sits against. The limber hole connects these pools into a continuous channel running from bow to stern, sloping gently toward the lowest point where the pump intake sits. The holes are small — a few inches square — because they are cut through structural members and must not weaken them. The limber hole is a compromise between drainage and strength: large enough to let water pass, small enough to leave the frame intact.
Limber boards are removable planks laid over the limber holes to protect them from blockage. Ballast stones, cargo scraps, sawdust, food waste, and the general accumulation of filth in a working ship's bilge can settle into the channels and dam them. The boards cover the holes during normal operations, lifted when the limbers need clearing. A clogged limber hole traps water on one side and leaves the pump drawing air on the other. The ship does not sink from a clogged limber — not immediately — but the trapped water rots the frame it sits against, and over months the structural timber softens. The limber board is a maintenance aid: it acknowledges that the drainage channels most critical to the ship's survival are the ones most vulnerable to obstruction.
A limber chain is a length of chain threaded through every limber hole from bow to stern, running the full length of the keel. By hauling the chain forward or aft, the crew scraped the channels clean without lifting the limber boards or entering the bilge — a space that was dark, foul, and often too confined for a person to work in. The chain passed through the holes by its own weight and flexibility, and its links abraded whatever was blocking the passage. The system solved the fundamental problem by brute mechanical simplicity: the same channels that kept the ship afloat were the channels most likely to clog, and the chain kept them clear by being dragged through them.
Three limbers: a drainage slot, a protective cover, a clearing chain. Each addresses the same problem — water collects in the hull and must reach the pump. The limber hole provides the path. The limber board protects the path. The limber chain clears the path when it blocks. Together they form a drainage system built into the bones of the ship, invisible during operation, critical when neglected, and maintained by a chain that does nothing but pass through.
