The Leech Line
The leech line is a thin cord running through a pocket or hem along the trailing edge (leech) of a sail. Tensioning the leech line cups the trailing edge inward slightly, preventing it from fluttering — a condition called motorboating for the noise it produces. The flutter wastes energy, accelerates wear on the sailcloth, and produces an irritating rhythmic flapping. The leech line does not change the sail's overall shape or drive. It controls only the behavior of the trailing edge, correcting a problem so specific that no other sail control can address it.
Anti-vibration mounts on machinery serve the leech line function. An engine or compressor mounted rigidly to a frame transmits its vibration into the structure — a mechanical flutter that wastes energy, produces noise, and fatigues the mounting points. Rubber or spring mounts inserted between the machine and the frame absorb the vibration at the edge of the system, the same way the leech line controls flutter at the edge of the sail. The mounts do not change the machine's output or the frame's strength. They control only the behavior of the boundary between the two.
In writing, a transitional sentence serves the leech line function between paragraphs. Without it, the trailing edge of one paragraph and the leading edge of the next flutter against each other — the reader feels a jolt, a break in flow, a moment of disorientation. The transitional sentence cups the trailing edge of the first paragraph inward, connecting it to the next. The transition does not change the content of either paragraph. It controls only the behavior of the boundary between them, smoothing what would otherwise be a distracting gap.
The leech line is the principle of edge-specific control — a dedicated mechanism that addresses a problem occurring at the trailing boundary of a system without affecting the system's core function. The leech line exists because the trailing edge is where the system's output meets the surrounding environment, and this boundary is inherently unstable. The sail's drive is generated by its curved surface; the trailing edge is where the airflow departs, and departure is turbulent. The leech line does not improve the sail's drive. It silences the disturbance at the edge where the sail's work ends and the surrounding air begins.
