The Leeboard
A leeboard is a flat board mounted on the outside of the hull, pivoting on a bolt near the rail. When lowered into the water on the leeward side, it resists the vessel's lateral drift — the same function as a centerboard or daggerboard, but external rather than internal. The leeboard requires no slot in the hull, no watertight trunk, no structural modification to the hull's bottom. It bolts to the outside. Dutch sailing barges, Thames barges, and Chinese junks used leeboards for centuries because these flat-bottomed vessels needed lateral resistance without the complexity or structural compromise of a through-hull installation.
External hard drives serve the leeboard function in computing. A computer's internal storage provides its primary data capacity. An external drive bolts on to the outside — plugged into a USB port, requiring no modification to the computer's internal architecture. The external drive provides additional capacity without the complexity of opening the case, finding a compatible internal bay, and connecting SATA cables. Like the leeboard, the external drive sacrifices elegance and integration for simplicity of attachment and removal.
In consulting, a contract specialist serves the leeboard function on a project team. The core team — the hull — handles the primary work. When the project encounters a specialized problem that would require lateral resistance the core team cannot provide — a legal question, a regulatory filing, a domain-specific analysis — a consultant is attached to the outside. The consultant requires no permanent hire, no restructuring of the team, no modification to the organizational chart. They bolt on, provide lateral resistance for the duration of the need, and detach when the need passes.
The leeboard is the principle of external augmentation — attaching a capability to the outside of a system rather than building it into the structure. The leeboard trades the hydrodynamic efficiency of an internal board for the structural simplicity of an external mount. It is the right solution when modifying the hull is too expensive, too risky, or unnecessary for the vessel's operating profile. The leeboard accepts a performance penalty — more drag, less efficiency — in exchange for the ability to add lateral resistance to any hull without redesigning it. Sometimes the outside of the wall is the right place for the tool.
