The Jam Cleat

A jam cleat is a V-shaped fitting with two jaws that narrow toward the bottom. A rope pulled into the V is gripped by the converging jaws — the harder the load pulls, the deeper the rope wedges into the taper, and the tighter the grip. To release, the operator lifts the rope up and out of the V. The jam cleat requires no wrapping, no figure-eight, no half hitch. A single pull sets it; a single lift releases it. The jam cleat trades the security of a wrapped cleat for the speed of instant engagement and release.

A doorstop wedge works on the same converging-taper principle. The wedge is kicked under the door's bottom edge, where the gap between door and floor narrows. The door's weight presses down on the wedge, driving it deeper into the taper. The harder the door presses, the tighter the wedge grips. To release, the wedge is kicked out from the wide end. Like the jam cleat, the doorstop uses the load's own force to drive the gripped element deeper into the convergence. No fastener, no latch — just a taper and a force.

In rhetoric, a loaded question serves the jam cleat function. The question is posed with a built-in assumption — "When did you stop cheating?" pulls the respondent into a narrowing channel where any direct answer confirms the assumption. The harder the respondent tries to answer within the question's frame, the deeper they are wedged into the assumption. The only escape is to lift out of the frame entirely — to reject the question's premise rather than answer within its taper. Like the jam cleat, the loaded question uses the respondent's own effort to deepen the grip.

The jam cleat is the principle of self-tightening restraint through convergent geometry. The mechanism is passive: no springs, no locks, no moving parts. The rope's own tension drives it deeper into the taper that holds it. Release requires a direction change — up instead of forward, out instead of in. The jam cleat is fast to engage and fast to release, but only if you know that release requires changing the direction of force. Those who pull harder to escape only set the grip deeper. Those who lift up walk free.
