The Housing Joint
A housing joint — also called a dado — is a groove cut across the grain of one board to receive the end or edge of another. A bookshelf side with dadoes cut at regular intervals receives the shelf boards, which slot into the grooves. The housing carries the shelf's load through bearing along the full width of the groove, not through a single fastener point. The joint is invisible from the front. The shelf appears to float between the sides, supported by nothing visible.
Tongue-and-groove flooring works on the same principle in the horizontal plane. Each board has a tongue milled along one edge and a groove along the other. The tongue of one board slides into the groove of its neighbor, locking the boards together laterally while allowing them to expand and contract along their length. No fastener connects the boards to each other — only to the subfloor. The joint between boards is entirely housed: each board's edge is received into the next board's groove.
In typography, the baseline grid is a housing joint for text. Each line of text sits in an invisible groove — the baseline — spaced at regular intervals down the page. Columns set to the same baseline grid align horizontally across the spread, even when their type sizes differ. The reader does not see the grid. The text appears to flow naturally. But the alignment is structural: the grid houses each line at a precise vertical position, the way the dado houses each shelf at a precise height.
The housing joint is the principle of reception — one member is prepared to receive another by having a space cut specifically for it. The groove does not grip, clamp, or compress. It simply provides a shaped void that matches the member it will hold. The fit is the joint. Loose, and the shelf rocks. Tight, and the wood cannot expand without splitting the side. The housing joint's precision is not in its strength but in its tolerance — cut to the thickness of the board it will receive, no more and no less.
