The Hounds

The hounds are projecting shoulders or cheeks on a mast, just below the point where the shrouds and stays attach. They provide a bearing surface — a ledge — for the trestle trees and crosstrees that support the top, the platform from which sailors work the upper rigging. The hounds are not a separate piece bolted on. In a traditional wooden mast, they are formed by leaving extra wood when the mast is shaped, or by adding cheek pieces fastened to the mast's sides. The mast narrows above and below them. The hounds are the point where the mast stops being a pole and becomes a structural junction.

In anatomy, the greater trochanter of the femur serves the same function. The femur narrows along its shaft, but at the hip, it widens into a bony prominence where the gluteal muscles and the hip joint capsule attach. The trochanter does not bear the body's weight — the femoral head in the acetabulum does that. The trochanter provides the attachment surface for the muscles that stabilize and rotate the leg. It is the hound of the femur: a widening at the point where forces must be distributed to surrounding structure.

In electrical engineering, a terminal block is a hound on a wire run. The wire carries current along its length, but at the point where connections must be made — where instruments, switches, or branch circuits attach — the wire terminates at a block with screw terminals or spring clamps. The block widens the connection point, providing a stable, accessible surface for multiple conductors to attach. The wire is the mast; the terminal block is the hound; the conductors that attach are the rigging.

The hounds mark the point where a linear member must become a junction. A mast that maintained uniform diameter could not support rigging — there would be nothing for the shrouds to bear against, nothing for the crosstrees to rest on. The hounds are the mast's acknowledgment that at one specific height, its role changes from carrying compression to distributing lateral forces. The widening is not ornament. It is the structural expansion required at the point where one function becomes many.
