The Horn Timber

The horn timber is a structural member at the stern of a wooden vessel, rising from the keel or deadwood at an angle to support the counter — the overhanging portion of the stern that extends beyond the rudderpost. The counter is the part of the ship that shelters the rudder head, provides a platform for the taffrail, and in many vessels houses the captain's cabin windows. The horn timber holds all of this up. It is the cantilever arm of the stern, carrying the weight of everything that extends past the point where the hull's buoyancy ends.

Cantilever beams in architecture work on the same principle. A balcony projecting from a building face has no support underneath it — the structure extends past its last point of support and carries load through bending resistance in the beam that continues back into the building. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is a series of cantilevered concrete trays, each extending over the waterfall with nothing below but air. The horn timber is Fallingwater's structural ancestor: a member that allows the useful part of the structure to extend past the supportable part.

In typography, a descender — the tail of a g, p, q, or y that drops below the baseline — is a horn timber of letterform design. The baseline is the structural floor of the text line. Most letter strokes stay above it. But certain letters require elements that project below, into the space between lines. The descender extends the letter's identity past the baseline the way the horn timber extends the stern past the buoyancy line. Without descenders, those letters would be indistinguishable from their baseline neighbors. The projection below the line is what makes the letter legible.

The horn timber is the structural permission to extend past the point of natural support. The hull's buoyancy ends at the waterline aft. The building's support ends at the foundation's edge. The text line's structure ends at the baseline. In each case, something useful needs to exist beyond that boundary — the counter, the balcony, the letter's tail. The horn timber provides the bending strength that carries load into unsupported space. It does not create new support. It extends existing support past its natural boundary, which requires the member to be stronger than anything that stays within the supported zone.
