The Hardy
The hardy hole is a square opening in the face of a blacksmith's anvil — typically three-quarters to one inch across. It holds tools. Any tool with a square shank of the right size drops into the hole and stays there, held by gravity and by the weight of the work placed on top. A hot cut hardy, a fuller, a swage, a bending fork — each has the same square shank and fits the same hole. The hardy hole is a universal socket: one interface, many tools, changed in seconds by lifting one out and dropping another in. The anvil was cast with this hole in mind. Every smith's tool collection is built around its dimensions.
The hot cut hardy is a chisel with its edge up. The square shank drops into the hardy hole, and the cutting edge projects above the anvil face. The smith lays a bar of hot metal across the edge and strikes downward with the hammer. The metal is cut between the hammer blow and the fixed edge — sheared, not chipped. Unlike a hand-held chisel, the hardy requires no second person to hold it and no hand near the point of impact. The smith grips the work with tongs in one hand, the hammer in the other, and controls the cut by positioning the metal over the edge. The hardy stays fixed. Everything else moves around it. The tool does not chase the work. The work is brought to the tool.
The pritchel hole is the other opening in the anvil face — round, smaller than the hardy hole, positioned near the far edge. Its primary purpose is to receive the waste from punching operations. The smith places hot metal over the pritchel hole, drives a punch through from above, and the slug — the disc of metal removed — falls through the hole and drops beneath the anvil. The pritchel hole is the anvil's drain: the place where removed material exits the system. It is also used to bend small stock by inserting a rod and levering it over the anvil edge, and as an anchor point for jigs and fixtures. But its essential function is passage. The square hole holds. The round hole lets go.
Three openings: a square socket, a fixed chisel, a round drain. Each is a hole in the anvil — a deliberate void in a tool defined by its mass and solidity. The hardy hole receives tools and holds them firm. The hot cut sits in the hardy hole and does the cutting the hammer cannot do alone. The pritchel hole passes waste through and out. The anvil is not just a block to hammer against. It is a platform with interfaces — mounting points and exit points — designed so the smith can do more than strike.
