The Gudgeon and Pintle

A gudgeon is a socket; a pintle is a pin. Together they form the hinge that attaches a rudder to a vessel's sternpost. The pintles are mounted on the rudder's leading edge, projecting forward. The gudgeons are mounted on the sternpost, opening aft. The rudder is hung by dropping the pintles into the gudgeons — the pins seat in the sockets, and the rudder pivots around this axis. The gudgeon-and-pintle hinge is the simplest possible bearing: a pin in a hole, repeated at two or three points along the rudder's height to distribute the load.

A door hinge follows the same gudgeon-and-pintle principle. The hinge consists of two leaves — one attached to the door, one to the frame — with interlocking knuckles through which a pin passes. The pin is the pintle; the knuckles are the gudgeons. The door hangs on the pin and pivots around it. The hinge distributes the door's weight across two or three hinge points along the door's edge, the same way the rudder's gudgeons distribute the rudder's weight and hydrodynamic load along the sternpost.

In a constitutional system, the relationship between the executive and legislative branches follows the gudgeon-and-pintle principle. The executive (the rudder) must pivot within limits set by the legislature (the sternpost). The constitution provides the gudgeons — the fixed sockets that define the axis of rotation. The executive's authority is the pintle — it seats in the constitutional sockets and can swing within the arc they allow. The executive can turn policy left or right, but only around the axis the constitution defines. Remove the gudgeons and the rudder — the executive — falls away from the sternpost entirely.

The gudgeon and pintle is the principle of constrained pivoting — a connection that allows rotation around one axis while preventing displacement along all others. The hinge permits movement in one degree of freedom (rotation) while restraining five others (three translations and two other rotations). This selective freedom is the hinge's defining feature. The rudder can swing but cannot lift, drop, or pull away from the stern. The door can swing but cannot slide, rise, or detach from the frame. The gudgeon and pintle is the architecture of controlled freedom: movement permitted on one axis, prohibited on all others.
