The Futtock

A futtock is one of the curved timbers that make up a ship's frame. A single rib of a large vessel — the transverse structure that gives the hull its shape — is too large and too curved to be cut from one piece of wood. Instead it is assembled from several futtocks: first futtock at the keel, second futtock above it, third futtock higher still, each one overlapping its neighbor by a foot or more and fastened with bolts or treenails. The compound curve of the hull — convex at the bilge, vertical at the topsides, tumbling home at the rail — is achieved one piece at a time. No single futtock contains the whole shape. The shape emerges only when the futtocks are assembled and the planking bends over them.

Futtock shrouds are the short lengths of chain or iron rod that connect the base of the topmast rigging to a band on the lower mast. On a square-rigged ship, the lower shrouds terminate at a platform called the top. The topmast shrouds start above the top and angle outward. The futtock shrouds pull those upper shrouds inward and downward, anchoring them to the mast rather than to the edge of the platform. For the sailor climbing aloft, the futtock shrouds are the obstacle: they angle outward and backward beneath the top, and the climber must lean out over the sea — hanging from hands and feet with the deck far below — to pass over them. This maneuver, called going over the futtock, was one of the most feared routine acts in seamanship. The lubber's hole — an opening in the platform that avoided the futtock shrouds — was available but marked the user as a coward.

The futtock plate is an iron ring encircling the mast at the level of the top. The futtock shrouds attach to it from below; the topmast rigging anchors to it from above. The plate distributes the combined tension of both rigging systems into the mast as a compressive hoop. Every force in the upper rig — wind on the topsails, the weight of spars and canvas, the shock of sudden gusts — passes through this ring on its way to the lower mast and down to the hull. The futtock plate is the junction where two separate structural systems meet, and its failure would disconnect the upper rig from the lower. The mast below would stand. The mast above would fall. The ring holds them together.

Three futtocks: a curved timber, a climbing obstacle, a structural ring. Each is a piece of a larger system — a frame built from overlapping sections, a rig connected by chains, a load path completed by a band of iron. The futtock is never the whole thing. It is the component that, joined to its neighbors, creates a shape or a connection that no single piece could achieve alone. The hull's curve, the rig's integrity, the sailor's fear — all arise from the arrangement of futtocks.
