The Froe

A froe is a cleaving tool — a long blade set perpendicular to a handle, struck with a mallet to split wood along the grain. Unlike a saw, which cuts across fibers, the froe follows the grain, separating the wood along its natural planes of weakness. The resulting pieces — shingles, shakes, staves, laths — retain unbroken grain fibers from end to end, making them stronger and more weather-resistant than sawn equivalents. The froe does not shape the wood. It finds the shape the wood already contains.

Diamond cleaving works on the same principle at the crystalline scale. A diamond cutter studies the stone's crystal lattice, identifies the planes of natural cleavage, and places a blade along that plane. A sharp blow splits the diamond cleanly along the lattice. The cut follows the structure, not the cutter's preference. If the cutter misreads the lattice and strikes across it, the diamond shatters. Like the froe, the cleaving tool succeeds by aligning with the material's internal organization rather than imposing an external geometry.

In organizational restructuring, a successful division follows the froe principle. A company splitting into two units must find the natural grain — the existing lines of communication, the revenue streams that operate independently, the teams that already function as separate units. A split along the grain produces two strong entities with intact internal connections. A split across the grain — cutting through teams that depend on each other, separating revenue from its support functions — produces two weakened halves that must immediately rebuild what was severed. The restructuring that works is the one that follows what the organization already is.

The froe is the principle of division along natural planes. It assumes that the material has internal structure — grain, lattice, organizational lines — and that the best separation follows that structure rather than overriding it. The froe requires knowledge of the material before the stroke. You must read the grain before you split. The saw can cut anywhere, and that is its advantage when precision geometry matters. But the froe produces stronger results because it respects the structure it finds. The froe is the tool for when the material knows better than the maker where it wants to come apart.
