The Eyebolt

An eyebolt is a bolt with a loop forged at one end instead of a hex head. The threaded shaft passes through a deck, frame, or bulkhead and is nutted on the other side, just like any bolt. But the exposed end is a ring — a fixed point to which a line, shackle, or block can be attached. The eyebolt converts a structural fastening into an attachment point. It does two things at once: it holds the member it passes through, and it provides an anchor for whatever is connected to its eye.

Carabiners on climbing harnesses serve a similar dual function. The carabiner clips to a harness loop (the structural attachment) and receives a rope, sling, or quickdraw (the functional attachment). The single device is both the connection to the climber and the connection to the protection. If either function were separated — one device for the harness, another for the rope — the system would have an additional failure point at the junction between them. The carabiner, like the eyebolt, concentrates both functions at a single fitting.

In electrical wiring, a grounding lug serves the eyebolt principle. The lug is mechanically fastened to the enclosure or chassis (structural attachment), and a grounding conductor is terminated at the same lug (electrical attachment). The lug is simultaneously a mechanical connection and an electrical connection. If the ground wire were terminated separately from the mechanical bond, corrosion or loosening at either connection could break the ground path. The combined fitting ensures that the mechanical and electrical connections share the same point of attachment and the same maintenance cycle.

The eyebolt is the principle of combining structural fastening with functional attachment at a single point. Every separate connection in a system is a potential failure point. When two functions — holding a member in place and providing an anchor for external forces — can be served by the same fitting, the system has one point to inspect, one point to maintain, and one point whose failure is visible. The eyebolt does not do two things. It does one thing — fasten — and shapes that fastening so it can also serve as an anchor.
