The Eigenfrequency
The eigenfrequency is the natural frequency at which a structure vibrates when disturbed and left to oscillate freely. A wine glass tapped with a knife rings at its eigenfrequency — the pitch determined by the glass's mass, stiffness, and geometry. A bridge has eigenfrequencies. A building has eigenfrequencies. A guitar string has eigenfrequencies. When an external force matches one of these natural frequencies, resonance occurs: the oscillation amplifies instead of damping, and the structure can shake itself apart. This is why soldiers are ordered to break step crossing a bridge: a column marching in time can drive the span at one of its eigenfrequencies until it shakes itself apart — the danger that retired the lockstep after troops collapsed the Broughton Suspension Bridge in 1831. (The far more famous case, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge of 1940, gets blamed on resonance too, but was something subtler: an aeroelastic flutter that fed on its own twisting motion rather than on any matching external beat.)
Radio tuning exploits eigenfrequency to select signals. A radio receiver contains a tunable circuit — an inductor and capacitor whose eigenfrequency can be adjusted by turning a dial. When the circuit's eigenfrequency matches the frequency of an incoming radio wave, the circuit resonates and the signal is amplified. All other frequencies pass through without exciting the circuit. The tuner works because every structure responds preferentially to its own eigenfrequency and ignores frequencies that do not match. The radio does not filter unwanted signals out. It selects the wanted signal by resonating with it.
In group dynamics, an idea that "resonates" with an audience follows the eigenfrequency principle. Every group has characteristic concerns — values, anxieties, aspirations — that function as the group's natural frequencies. A message tuned to one of these frequencies is amplified by the group: shared, discussed, embraced. A message at a different frequency passes through without effect, regardless of its content or volume. Political slogans, advertising taglines, and viral content succeed or fail based on whether they match the eigenfrequency of their target audience. The message does not create the response. It excites a response the structure was already prepared to give.
The eigenfrequency is the principle that every structure has inherent modes of vibration determined by its physical properties, and that the structure responds disproportionately to external forces that match these modes. The eigenfrequency is not imposed from outside. It is a property of the structure itself — a consequence of what it is made of and how it is shaped. This means that knowing a structure's eigenfrequency tells you both its vulnerability (the frequency that could destroy it) and its selectivity (the frequency it will amplify above all others). The eigenfrequency is the structure's fingerprint: unique, inherent, and consequential.
