The Deadrise
Deadrise is the angle between the bottom of a boat's hull and the horizontal plane. A flat-bottomed skiff has zero deadrise — its bottom sits flush on the water like a plate. A deep-V hull might carry twenty degrees or more, the bottom rising sharply from the keel to the chine. The angle is invisible when the boat is in the water. It determines everything about how the hull behaves.
A flat bottom maximizes stability at rest. The boat sits level, resists tipping, and carries load efficiently in calm water. But when waves arrive, the flat surface slams — the entire bottom strikes the water simultaneously, with no angle to deflect the impact. A deep-V hull slices through chop, each wave meeting a surface that parts it rather than confronting it head-on. But the V-hull rolls more at rest, requires more power to push at low speeds, and carries less load for its width. The deadrise is the choice between comfort in stillness and competence in motion.
Knife blade geometry encodes the same tradeoff. A cleaver has almost zero angle between the flat faces — it is thick, heavy, designed to split through material with force. A fillet knife carries a steep acute angle — thin, flexible, designed to slice along contours. The angle of the blade determines whether the tool is a wedge or a scalpel. You cannot optimize for both. A cleaver that tried to be thin would shatter. A fillet knife that tried to be thick would tear the flesh instead of separating it.
Road camber works on the same principle. A road surface is not flat — it rises slightly toward the center, shedding water to the gutters. The angle is barely perceptible to the driver but determines whether rainwater flows off the surface or pools on it. Too little camber and the road floods. Too much and vehicles drift toward the edge. The angle is designed to be below the threshold of notice and above the threshold of function.
Deadrise is the geometry of compromise between states. Every hull must be at rest sometimes and in motion sometimes. The angle chosen makes one of those states easier and the other harder. There is no deadrise that serves both equally well, which is why every hull is a declaration about what conditions the builder expected to encounter most often. The angle is a frozen prediction.
