The Datum

A pelorus is a compass with no compass in it. On a ship's bridge it looks like the real thing — a graduated circle, a card marked in degrees, a pair of sighting vanes you look across to take the bearing of a lighthouse or another vessel — but there is no magnetic needle inside, nothing that seeks north on its own. A pelorus does not know which way it is pointing. Before it is any use, someone has to orient it: align its zero with the ship's head, or set it to the heading the real compass reads. Only then do the bearings it gives mean anything. Point it across the water and it will tell you, precisely, the angle to that lighthouse — relative to a north it was handed. Take away the handoff and the instrument is exact about nothing in particular. It measures direction perfectly and has none of its own.

Relative pitch is the same instrument in a musician's ear. A person with good relative pitch can hear that two notes are a fifth apart, can transpose a melody into any key, can name every interval in a chord — all the relationships, exactly. What they cannot do is tell you the first note's name out of silence. Sound an A and say "that is an A," and the whole system lights up: now every other pitch has a name, derived from the one they were given. Without that reference tone they hear the shape of the music perfectly and cannot locate it. Absolute pitch — the rare ability to name a note cold — carries its own reference inside. Relative pitch, which is most of us, is precise about every distance and waits to be told where zero is.

An aircraft's altimeter has the same dependence built into a dial. It reads altitude by measuring air pressure, which falls in a known way as you climb — but the pressure at any given height drifts with the weather, so the instrument has to be told today's reference. Pilots set the altimeter before they descend: dial in the local sea-level pressure the tower reports, and the needle reads true; leave yesterday's setting in and it will confidently show you a height you are not at. The altimeter resolves a few feet of climb beautifully. What it cannot supply is the one number that makes those feet mean an altitude — that comes from the ground, by radio, from outside the aircraft. Fly from high pressure to low without resetting, and the ground rises to meet you while the dial still reads safe.

The shared name for the missing thing is a datum: the reference point a measurement is made from. Each of these instruments is exact about intervals — degrees, semitones, feet — and silent about absolutes, because the absolute is not theirs to hold. They supply resolution; they cannot supply orientation. The datum always comes from outside: the ship's heading, the given note, the reported pressure. And the failure mode is always the same and always quiet — not a loss of precision but a loss of reference, the instrument reading flawlessly against a zero that has drifted or was never set. It does not feel like error. It feels like a clear, exact answer, which is what makes it dangerous. A system can know every relationship it contains with total precision and still have no idea where it stands, until something it cannot generate for itself tells it which way is north.
