The Coaming

A coaming is a raised lip around a deck opening. Hatch, companionway, skylight, ventilator — wherever the deck is cut, the coaming stands a few inches above the surface and prevents water from running below. It is not a cover. It is a threshold. Water that crosses the deck meets the coaming and is diverted sideways toward the scuppers. The hatch cover sits on the coaming, not on the deck, so even if the cover leaks the water falls onto the raised ledge and drains outward rather than inward. The coaming is the last line of defense at a point where the hull's integrity has been deliberately broken.

On a sailboat, the cockpit coaming is the raised wall surrounding the steering area. It stands eight or ten inches above the cockpit sole and runs the full perimeter. The crew sits against it. It keeps loose gear from sliding overboard. In moderate conditions it does these things and nobody thinks about it. In heavy weather, when a wave breaks over the stern and fills the cockpit to knee depth, the coaming becomes structural: it contains the water, directs it to the cockpit drains, and prevents it from running forward along the deck and down the companionway into the cabin. A yacht without coamings or with coamings too low is a yacht that can be flooded from its own cockpit. The height of the coaming is the designer's answer to the question: how much sea can the boat take before the inside becomes the outside?

Aircraft door sills serve the same function at a different scale. The raised threshold at the base of a cargo door or passenger entry prevents rain, fuel, and hydraulic fluid from entering the fuselage during ground operations. On pressurized aircraft, the door frame itself functions as a structural coaming — the door plug seats against a machined lip that bears the pressure differential at the edge of the opening. The coaming is where loads concentrate. A fuselage at cruise altitude holds eight pounds per square inch of outward pressure. Every edge of every opening in that pressure vessel is a coaming in the structural sense: a raised, reinforced boundary that turns an interruption in the skin back into a continuous load path.

Three coamings: around a hatch, around a cockpit, around a fuselage opening. Each is a raised edge at a place where a continuous surface has been interrupted. The coaming does not close the opening. It borders it — defines where the inside ends and the outside begins, and ensures that what belongs outside stays outside even when conditions try to push it through. The coaming is the architecture of the edge itself: not a wall, not a door, but the threshold that makes walls and doors meaningful.
