The Cleat

A cleat is a fitting with two horns — projecting arms — around which a rope is wrapped in a figure-eight pattern to hold it under load. The rope arrives under tension, wraps around the base of the cleat, crosses over the top, wraps around the far horn, crosses back, and locks with a half hitch on the final pass. The figure-eight distributes the load's force across the cleat's structure through friction at each turn. The cleat does not grip the rope mechanically. It provides surfaces for the rope to grip itself. The rope holds because it presses against the horn at each crossing; the more the load pulls, the harder the rope presses, and the more friction holds it in place.

Coat hooks work on the same principle at the scale of daily objects. A hook on a wall does not clasp the coat. It provides a surface — a projecting arm — over which the coat's collar or loop hangs. Gravity pulls the coat downward; the hook redirects that force horizontally against its surface. Friction between fabric and hook prevents the coat from sliding off. The hook, like the cleat, is a passive geometry that converts a pulling force into a pressing force against a surface, and the pressing force generates the friction that holds the load.

In law, precedent functions as a cleat for judicial reasoning. A legal argument arrives under the tension of a dispute. The lawyer wraps the argument around a prior ruling — citing the precedent, applying its logic to the current facts, crossing back to the present case. Each reference to precedent is a turn around the horn. The argument holds not because the precedent mechanically binds the court but because the pressure of consistent reasoning — the friction of logical coherence — makes it harder for the court to deviate. The more weight the argument carries, the tighter it wraps around the precedent.

The cleat is the principle of passive holding through directed friction. It has no moving parts, no springs, no latches. It holds because its geometry converts the load's own force into the friction that resists the load. The cleat is the simplest possible holding mechanism: a surface shaped so that the thing being held presses against it harder the more it tries to leave. The design insight is that you do not need to grip something if you can arrange for it to grip itself.
