The Ceiling
In nautical usage, the ceiling is not overhead. It is the interior planking that lines the inside of the hull — the surface you see when you look at the inside of the frames. The ceiling covers the frames, protects them from cargo shifting against them, and in some vessels provides additional longitudinal stiffness. The word comes from the same root as "sealing" — the ceiling seals the interior, creating a smooth surface over the structural skeleton of the hull. The nautical ceiling is underfoot and alongside, never above.
Wainscoting in domestic architecture does the same work at a different scale. Wood paneling on the lower portion of an interior wall covers the plaster or masonry behind it, protects it from furniture and foot traffic, and provides a finished surface. The structural wall is behind the wainscoting. The wainscoting does not hold the building up. It lines the interior, turning a structural surface into a habitable one. Like the nautical ceiling, wainscoting is the layer between the structure and the use.
Lining in garment construction follows the same principle. A jacket's outer fabric is the structural shell — it holds its shape, resists weather, displays the pattern. The lining covers the interior seams, prevents the outer fabric from catching on the wearer's clothing, and provides a smooth surface against the skin. The lining adds no warmth (that is the interlining's job) and no structure (that is the canvas and interfacing). It is purely the interior finish — the ceiling of the garment, sealing the construction away from the user.
The ceiling is the principle that structure and surface are different problems. The frames of a hull are optimized for strength. The ceiling is optimized for contact — smooth, continuous, covering the gaps and edges that the structural members leave exposed. A hull with no ceiling is structurally complete but operationally harsh: cargo catches on frame edges, bilge water is inaccessible for cleaning, the interior is a cage of ribs. The ceiling does not make the hull stronger. It makes the hull livable. The difference between structure and finish is the difference between what holds and what is held against.
