The Carvel

Carvel construction builds a hull by laying planks edge-to-edge on a pre-erected frame, producing a smooth exterior surface. Unlike clinker construction, where the planks overlap and create the structure, carvel construction requires the skeleton first. The frames — ribs, floors, keel — are assembled and faired, and then the planks are bent around them and fastened. The frames determine the hull's shape. The planks are a skin applied to that shape. The seams between planks are caulked with cotton or oakum driven into the gaps and sealed with pitch or compound.

Drywall construction in buildings follows the carvel principle. The stud frame is erected first — vertical studs, horizontal plates, headers over openings — creating the skeleton that determines the room's shape. Then sheets of drywall are fastened to the studs, creating a smooth interior surface. The seams between sheets are taped and mudded — the drywall equivalent of caulking. Like carvel planking, the drywall is a skin applied to a pre-existing frame. The frame does the structural work. The skin provides the finished surface.

In corporate reporting, a slide deck follows the carvel construction method. The outline — the logical framework of the argument — is built first: key points, supporting data, conclusions. This is the frame. Then the slides are laid against the framework, each one covering a section of the argument with a smooth, presentable surface. The seams between slides are smoothed with transitions and connecting language — the caulking that prevents the argument from leaking between sections. Like carvel planking, the slides are a skin. The argument holds because the frame beneath them is sound.

Carvel is the principle of frame-first construction — building the skeleton before applying the skin, so that the form is determined by the structure rather than emerging from the surface. Carvel construction produces a smoother result than clinker: the hull is fair, the surface is uniform, the seams are tight. But carvel depends entirely on the accuracy of the frame. A poorly faired frame produces a hull with unfair surfaces that no amount of planking can correct. The frame must be right before the first plank goes on, because the planks have no structural memory of their own. The skin follows the skeleton exactly, for better or worse.
