The Carline
A carline in shipbuilding is a short fore-and-aft timber running between the deck beams. The beams cross the hull athwartships, supporting the deck from below. But between the beams — the intervals of two or three feet where no beam runs — the deck planking has no support beneath it. The carlines fill these gaps, running parallel to the ship's length and connecting beam to beam. Around deck openings — hatches, mast partners, companionways — the carlines frame the edges, supporting the cut planking where the continuous surface has been interrupted. The carline is secondary structure: it does not define the hull's shape or carry the primary loads. It holds the deck up in the places where the main framing left room.
In automotive engineering, the carline is the structural rail that forms the boundary between the roof panel and the side glass. It runs from the windshield header at the front to the rear window frame at the back, above the door openings, connecting the A-pillar, B-pillar, and C-pillar at the roofline. The carline must be strong enough to support the roof in a rollover — federal standards require the roof to resist a force equal to three times the vehicle's weight — and narrow enough that it does not create a blind spot for the driver. The structural requirement wants mass and cross-section. The visibility requirement wants the opposite. The carline is the compromise: as small as safety permits, as strong as the space allows.
Carline knees in wooden boatbuilding are small curved brackets connecting the carlines to the deck beams at their right-angle junctions. A few inches of oak, hackmatack, or naturally curved crook timber, shaped to bridge the corner and fastened with screws or rivets. They are among the smallest structural pieces in the vessel — easy to overlook, easy to omit in a careless repair, and critical out of proportion to their size. Without the knee, the carline-to-beam joint is a hinge: a right angle held by nothing but the fasteners, free to open under load. The knee converts the hinge into a frame. A boat that loses its carline knees does not fail immediately. The deck gets soft. The planking flexes underfoot. The structure forgets, incrementally, that it was meant to be rigid.
Three carlines: a deck timber, a roof rail, a bracketed joint. Each provides secondary support in the spaces that the primary structure leaves open. The carline is not the beam, not the pillar, not the main frame. It is the member that fills in — that runs between the strong points and ensures the surface holds between them. The carline's absence is not dramatic. It is gradual: a softening, a flex, a slow loss of the rigidity that was there when everything was properly framed.
