The Capstan

A capstan is a vertical drum mounted on the deck, turned by bars inserted into holes near its top. The crew pushes the bars in a circle, and the drum rotates. A rope or chain wrapped around the drum multiplies the crew's force through friction — each turn of rope around the drum increases the holding power exponentially. The capstan equation (Euler's formula) states that the holding force increases as e raised to the power of the coefficient of friction times the angle of wrap. Three turns of rope around a capstan can multiply the holding force by a factor of a hundred or more. A single sailor can hold a load that would otherwise require dozens.

Compound interest follows the capstan equation applied to money. Each compounding period wraps another turn of capital around the earning mechanism. The interest earned in one period becomes part of the principal that earns interest in the next. Like the capstan, each additional wrap multiplies the effect exponentially, not linearly. A small initial investment compounded over many periods grows to a sum far exceeding what linear addition would produce. The exponential character of compounding, like the exponential character of capstan friction, means that the number of wraps matters more than the initial force.

In social media, viral sharing follows the capstan's exponential multiplication. A post shared by one person reaches their followers. If a fraction of those followers share it, the post wraps another turn around the amplification mechanism. Each turn multiplies the audience exponentially. The coefficient of friction is the share rate — the fraction of viewers who pass the post onward. A high share rate wraps the post tightly around the capstan of network distribution. A low share rate lets the post slip. The capstan equation predicts both outcomes: tight wraps hold; loose wraps slide.

The capstan is the principle of exponential force multiplication through cumulative friction. Each wrap adds to the total holding power not additively but multiplicatively — the same factor applied again and again. This means that small differences in the coefficient of friction or the number of wraps produce enormous differences in outcome. A rope wrapped twice holds modestly. The same rope wrapped five times holds enormously. The capstan is the mechanism for when the available force is small, the required force is large, and the only resource you have is more turns.
