The Breast Line
A breast line is a mooring line that runs perpendicular to the vessel's centerline — straight from the vessel's side to the dock. Unlike spring lines, which run at angles fore and aft to prevent longitudinal movement, the breast line resists only lateral movement — it holds the vessel against the dock or away from it. The breast line is the simplest mooring line: a straight pull in one direction, resisting displacement in one axis.
A seatbelt serves the breast line function on a vehicle occupant. The belt runs across the body perpendicular to the direction of travel. In a collision, the occupant's inertia would carry them forward — longitudinal displacement. The seatbelt resists lateral displacement relative to the seat: it holds the body against the seat, preventing the occupant from being thrown into the steering wheel or through the windshield. The seatbelt is a breast line between the body and the seat, resisting displacement in one axis.
In personal boundaries, a firm "no" serves the breast line function. The refusal runs perpendicular to the other person's direction of approach — a direct, lateral resistance to being pushed closer than the boundary allows. A "no" does not redirect the other person's approach (that would be a spring line — a deflection). It simply resists the lateral displacement: you may not cross this line. The breast line of a boundary is strongest when it is perpendicular — when the resistance is direct, unambiguous, and aligned with the axis of the unwanted movement.
The breast line is the principle of direct lateral resistance — a connection that opposes movement in one axis, perpendicular to the system's primary direction of travel. The breast line is not subtle. It does not redirect, deflect, or negotiate. It holds in one direction. This directness is its strength and its limitation: the breast line is the strongest mooring line in its axis and useless in all others. A vessel held by breast lines alone will not drift sideways but may surge fore and aft without resistance. Complete mooring requires breast lines and spring lines — direct resistance and angular resistance working together.
